Introduction

Content in your repo. A CMS for editors. A Next.js app for the site.

Backmatter is a CMS for content that lives in your repository.

Editors change documents in the CMS. Developers keep the models, the components, and the files in git. The Next.js app renders those files. Git is the history you own. The CMS edits a working copy of a document, and publish writes that copy back as a commit. The public site reads the published files. It does not call GitHub on each request.

That split is the product. The repo stays the source of truth, so a developer can open a file, review a diff, or move the project. The CMS exists so an editor can change a sentence, see it on the real page, and publish, without opening a pull request for every edit.

A document

A document is one file. A model in models/ says what kind of document it is and which URL it has. Add the file and the route is there. Edit it, preview it on the Next.js page, then publish it back to the repo.

Next

Install Backmatter in a Next.js app, then add the first document.
